Western Civilization 1789 to Present History 103, Section 2 CRN 30749 Dr. Mark Peterson Milam 213 Office: Milam 302A 3 credits Office Hours: TR 2-3 Spring 2006 Telephone: 737-8641 Tuesday & Thursday 12:30-1:50 dr.markpeterson@earthlink.net This introductory course covers the beginning of the Modern World in ?western civilization? and the role of western traditions in the development of that world. For the most part we will focus on European history during the 19th and 20th centuries, but we will also discuss the ways in which other regions affected Europe at this time and how the ideas and culture of the western world influenced developments in rest of the world. No prerequisite courses are required to take this class, which is considered a Baccalaureate Core Course. Assignments: Map Quiz 15 points 19th Century Paper 30 points Midterm Exam 50 points 20th Century Paper 30 points Final Exam 75 points The midterm exam will consist of four short identifications chosen from a list of ten terms and an essay on one of three possible topics. The final will have four identifications and one essay on material since the midterm as well as an essay on one of three cumulative topics. For each of the papers, write an academic essay over 1000 words long on your views on what were the most significant ways that the lives of people in Europe changed over the course of that century.
